Joe Zeff Design
Joe Zeff Design is a forward-thinking creative studio that optimizes content, technology and business opportunities. Based near New York City, we are registered Apple developers, an Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Solutions Partner and WoodWing’s first global Creative/Design Partner.
We develop next-generation apps that leverage the multimedia capabilities of iPad tablets. We designed and developed “Above & Beyond: George Steinmetz,” an iTunes App of the Week, and “Above & Beyond: John Kascht” — as well as the 9/11 commemorative edition of TIME Magazine. We designed and illustrated two apps for Touch Press, both of which became iTunes Apps of the Week — “Solar System for iPad” and “March of the Dinosaurs” — and designed PepsiCo’s global recruiting app. Most recently, Joe Zeff Design began working with Fast Company and PC Magazine to develop tablet versions of their leading brands.
We’re also known for computer-generated illustration, as seen on hundreds of magazine covers including TIME, Fortune and Rolling Stone, as well as advertising campaigns for M&Ms and Porsche, Broadway theater posters and chart-topping album covers. We’re able to create photorealistic renderings that bring life to concepts, typography, information graphics and virtual product shots.
We’ve also done corporate branding for Fortune 500 clients such as Unisys and PepsiCo. We helped create and implement a worldwide employment brand for PepsiCo translated into 18 languages, with strategies for reaching job candidates through print, web and mobile channels. We designed and illustrated several brochures for Unisys that used information graphics to demystify the complex systems of global commerce.
Joe opened the studio in 2000 after climbing the ranks of visual journalism, working at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Detroit Free Press, The New York Times and Time magazine. As Graphics Director of Time, he was among the first to seize the potential of computer-generated imagery for print. He and his staff inspired newspaper and magazine artists worldwide to embrace CGI for information graphics, and Joe applied that expertise toward creating cover illustrations for Time and other publications. Other opportunities followed, leading to the formation of Joe Zeff Design.
He is joined by Ed Gabel, who worked with Joe as Time’s Associate Graphics Director and is known worldwide for his 3D and Photoshop talents; Josh Penrod, a former designer at the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times; and a growing team of staff artists, designers and producers. In addition, Joe Zeff Design works closely with strategic partners from throughout the world that enable it to provide clients with endless capabilities.
